Pattern Stitches
K2 P2 Rib Pattern
Rnd 1 (RS): *K2, P2; repeat from * around.
Pattern Rnd: As Rnd 1.

Stockinette Stitch Pattern
Rnd 1: Knit around.
Pattern Rnd: As Rnd 1.

Notes: The hat is knit in the round from bottom up. When decreasing for crown and there are too few stitches remaining to knit comfortably using circular needle, switch to double-pointed needles.

1. Using smaller circular needle and A, cast on 40 sts. Place a marker for beginning of round and join, being careful not to twist sts.

Beg K2 P2 Rib Pattern, and work even for 2 rnds.

Change to larger circular needle and B, beg Stockinette St Pattern, and work even until piece measures approx 7″ from beg.

Decrease for Crown

Next Rnd: *Ssk, k3; repeat from * around—32 sts rem.

Next Rnd: *Ssk, k2; repeat from * around—24 sts rem.

Next Rnd: *Ssk, k1; repeat from * around—16 sts rem.

Next Rnd: *Ssk; repeat from * around—8 sts rem.

Do not bind off.  Cut yarn, leaving 12″ tail.

Weave yarn tail through rem sts at top of hat. Secure yarn tail.

Sew button to border using matching thread.
